Dark Visions: The Current Cinema: The New Yorker
Lane tips his hand by revealing three of “Watchmen’s” final-act revelations: the identity of the villain, the nature of his scheme, and the heroes’ response to that scheme. This review appeared on the New Yorker’s website on March 1, almost a week before the film hits theaters. The average New Yorker reader probably won’t have seen the film 5 days in advance of its opening, and Lane assumes that his reader isn’t going to see it, period, so there’s no harm in giving away the ending.
The book’s (literal) eleventh-hour twists give it a lot of its force. Maybe the film doesn’t operate the same way, of course; and Lane isn’t wrong in guessing that a good portion of the viewers of this movie will be intimately familiar with the text.
