I left the house for a few hours today. I kept forgetting that it is Valentine’s Day, but here are the things that periodically reminded me:
* The movie theater downtown is showing “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” today and tomorrow only. This is fortuitous, as I am writing a paper on the film; I will go see it, tomorrow afternoon, alone.
* I overheard a student in the library speaking in angry tones too loud for a library about how this holiday is a commercial scam designed to sell chocolates.
* I saw an older (than me) couple at the coffee shop being inappropriately physically intimate while in conversation with a third friend.
* The coffee shop’s windows were nearly obscured by red paper hearts.
* On the walk home a woman was passing out little square things that turned out to be (individually wrapped) condoms, apparently generic.
